Child-Safe Balcony Railings: A Parent's Guide for Indian Apartments
If you have young children, balcony safety is non-negotiable. Three rules make an apartment balcony safe.
1. Height: At Least 1 Metre
A 1 m (or higher for high-rises) railing is hard for a toddler to climb or fall over.
2. The 100 mm Gap Rule
Openings must be under 100 mm so a child's head can't pass through. Avoid wide vertical or horizontal gaps.
3. Nothing Climbable
Skip horizontal bars and furniture near the railing that a child could use as a step.
Retrofit Options
Glass infill or fine vertical balusters can upgrade an existing grill. See height rules and ask us about child-safe designs.
