Balcony Railing Height Rules in India (NBC 2016 Explained)

Railing height isn't decoration — it's the law. Here's what India's NBC 2016 actually requires.

The 1-Metre Minimum

For most residential balconies, the top of the railing must be at least 1 m above the finished floor. High-rise and public buildings often specify 1.1–1.2 m.

How Height Is Measured

  • From the finished floor (not the parapet base) to the top of the handrail.
  • For glass railings, to the top edge of the glass or the handrail, whichever is higher.

Gap & Climbing Rules

Keep openings under 100 mm so children can't slip through, and avoid horizontal bars that are easy to climb.
